It's unfortunate that Al Pacino and Mary Louise Parker don't appear together in Angels In America, HBO's adaptation of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning epic play. Then again, if they had to share the screen, television sets across the land might very well explode from the surplus of electricity that these two actors generate.
I admit to not having seen much of Pacino's body of work. It's true, I've haven't seen any of The Godfather films. That being said, I was completely transfixed by his performance as Roy Cohn. Every line, every glance, every nuance, every reaction was so perfect and exquisite. Words can't begin to describe how amazing he is in Angels In America. Some critics are hailing it as the best performance of his career. If this miniseries were released as a theatrical film, he would walk away with every award possible.
As for Mary Louise Parker, I have always been a huge fan of her work, from her early days in Longtime Companion and Boys On The Side, to her current recurring role on The West Wing. She is never anything less than outstanding. I can say without a doubt, however, that she gives her most astonishing performance to date in Angels In America. Once again, I'm at a loss for words to describe the sheer brilliance of her performance.
I haven't overlooked Meryl Streep or Emma Thompson, nor any of the male performances. I enjoyed each and every one of them. But, so far, Pacino and Parker outshine the entire cast. With the lengthy list of credits and awards that this bunch boasts, that's saying an awful lot.
If you haven't caught the first half of Angels In America yet, I feel sorry for you. You don't know what you're missing.

Another mundane afternoon
The stars, moon and planets must be doing some fucked up dances in the sky. Everything seems just a little bit off...almost slow-motion, or that feeling of being underwater. If Mercury isn't in retrograde yet, I can only imagine what sort of insane things will happen when it is.
My off-kilter mood might have something to do with my alarm clock. My alarm clock and I aren't on the best of terms to begin with, but I try to accept the fact that it has an unpleasant duty every morning and not shoot the messenger. That doesn't mean I haven't lashed out at it in the past, throwing it to the floor or banging it against the wall, in fits of disbelief or frustration.
This morning, the alarm clock got its revenge. At eight o'clock, it buzzed as usual. I banged around on the nightstand to hit the snooze button. The snooze usually sounds five minutes later. Not so this morning. I fell back asleep, only to be awoken to the sound of smashing glass (thanks to the glass shop next to my building that destroys the previous day's mistakes at ungodly early hours). I rolled over and looked at the clock. It said 9:25.
9:25!!!
I needed to be out of the house by 9:25 to get to work by 10:00 (despite the fact that I never leave the house until 9:40 and I get to the office every day by 10:15). I flew out of bed and tried to shake myself out of my sleepy haze. On my way to the bathroom, I glanced at the clock on the cable box. It read 8:55. Confused, I looked back at my alarm clock. It still said 9:25. I looked at the VCR clock, the microwave clock and the clock over the bed (thankfully I had finally replaced the batteries in it). They all read 8:55. I turned on the television. New York One showed the current time as 8:55. By the time I got really neurotic about it, the Weather Channel showed the time as 8:56.
That bastard alarm clock. I'm not sure how it happened, but it got set a half-hour fast. And my snooze alarm didn't go off after five minutes. Clearly, the evil spirit that has taken up residence in the clock has been having some fun at my expense. It's bad enough that I have to clean the apartment from top to bottom tonight, in order to make it look good for Fireman and Firewoman's arrival tomorrow afternoon. But now I have to perform an exorcism as well.
Oh well. It's a good thing I just picked up a new jug of chicken blood and haven't put away the sacrificial altar yet.
